Does Your BYD Warranty Actually Work Overseas? What Every Dealer in Africa, UAE & SE Asia Needs to Know

Does Your BYD Warranty Actually Work Overseas? What Every Dealer in Africa, UAE & SE Asia Needs to Know

BYD international warranty explained for dealers in Nigeria, Kenya, UAE, and Southeast Asia. What's covered, what isn't, and how to make warranty claims work in your market.

ElectricCar-BYD Export

After-Sales & Warranty Desk

This question comes up quietly in almost every serious BYD import conversation: If something goes wrong after delivery, who's responsible? The vehicle is in Lagos. The seller is in Shenzhen. The warranty document is in Mandarin.

It's a fair concern — and it deserves a direct answer. Over the past three years, we've coordinated dozens of warranty cases across Nigeria, Kenya, the UAE, and Southeast Asia. Here's what the warranty actually covers, what falls through the cracks, and how real claims work in your specific market.

BYD's Warranty Structure — What Covers What

BYD's warranty is VIN-based, not buyer-based. It attaches to the vehicle identification number at manufacture and transfers with the vehicle regardless of how many hands it passes through. What matters: the VIN registration and the export invoice chain.

Coverage by Market — The Real Picture

Nigeria (Lagos, Abuja)

Authorized partners: Stallion Group & CFAO Motors. Battery, powertrain, and electronics claims supported. Parts lead time: 7–21 days from Chinese depot. Status: Active — claims processed.

Kenya (Nairobi, Mombasa)

Authorized dealer: Simba Corp BYD. Strong East Africa hub. Handles battery diagnostics and full warranty claims with proper export documentation. Status: Active — claims processed.

Ghana (Accra, Tema)

Toyota Tsusho West Africa partnership. Most standard claims OK. Battery replacements may require routing via Nairobi or Dubai hub. Status: Partial — some hub routing.

UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi)

Three authorized centres in Dubai. Fastest regional turnaround — typically 3–7 days for parts, same-week diagnosis. BYD ME parts hub: Jebel Ali. Status: Full network — best in region.

Saudi Arabia

Al-Futtaim & Bin Saeed partnership. Expanding rapidly under Vision 2030 EV mandate. All warranty categories covered. Status: Growing — all categories.

Other African markets

Ethiopia, Uganda, Senegal, Tanzania: service via regional partners. Nairobi hub coordinates East/Central Africa. Dubai hub covers North Africa and Gulf periphery. Battery claims require hub transport. Status: Limited — hub coordination needed.

Case study — West Africa (2025)

8 BYD Dolphins — Battery Management Unit fault, Lagos

A Lagos ride-hailing fleet with 8 BYD Dolphins (imported early 2025) reported Battery Management Unit (BMU) communication errors on three vehicles at ~14,000km each. Dashboard warning only — no range or charging impact.

We initiated a warranty claim via BYD's after-sales portal using VIN numbers, original export invoice, and OBD diagnostic report. Claim accepted within 72 hours. CFAO Motors Lagos performed the repair — firmware update plus one BMU module replacement on the worst-affected vehicle.

What Voids the Warranty

Just as important as what's covered:

  • Non-approved DC chargers — specifically those without OCPP compliance or BYD certification. BYD-certified Level 2 AC chargers are fine.
  • Flood submersion — EV battery packs are IP67 splash-rated, not flood-rated. Lagos rainy season events have voided claims; BYD detects submersion via battery cell logs.
  • Tampered odometer — BYD's DiLink telematics logs continuous mileage. Tampering is detectable and voids all coverage immediately.
  • Non-genuine parts in prior repairs — subsequent related failures may be rejected. This is why genuine parts sourcing matters.

Making a Claim — Two Scenarios

Your country has authorized service

Contact the authorised centre with your VIN and original export invoice. The centre runs a BYD-approved diagnostic scan and raises a warranty ticket. BYD approves within 24–72 hours for straightforward cases. Parts are dispatched from the regional hub — typically 5–15 days depending on availability.

Your country has no authorized centre

Contact your exporter with the fault details and VIN. We initiate the claim with BYD's after-sales team, authorise a specific repair procedure with a vetted local mechanic, or arrange transport to the nearest hub (Nairobi for East/Central Africa; Dubai for Gulf and North Africa). Complex claims take 3–6 weeks in this scenario.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does BYD offer international warranty coverage for cars sold in Africa?

Yes — BYD's factory warranty is VIN-based and technically valid globally. In-country service depends on whether an authorized BYD dealer exists in your market. Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa have active authorised centres. Markets without local coverage coordinate through regional hubs in Dubai or Nairobi via their exporter.

What happens to my BYD warranty if I import through a Chinese exporter?

The warranty follows the VIN, not the buyer. A legitimate licensed exporter provides the BYD factory certificate and VIN documentation needed to establish warranty eligibility. Vehicles from unverified sources without proper export paperwork often have unregistered VINs — and face warranty rejection.

How long is the BYD battery warranty?

6 years / 150,000km on the Blade Battery (LFP). If capacity falls below 70% SoH due to a manufacturing fault, BYD repairs or replaces the pack at no charge. Normal degradation is not covered — but LFP chemistry degrades far more slowly than NMC in hot climates, so the 70% threshold is rarely reached before 8–10 years under normal use.

What voids the BYD warranty overseas?

Flood submersion (detectable via battery cell logs), non-approved DC chargers without OCPP certification, odometer tampering (DiLink logs continuous mileage), and repairs using non-genuine parts. Vehicles from grey-market sources without proper VIN registration are not covered at all.
